Sundays 2 April, 7 May and 4 June / 6 pm
Artium Museoa Auditorium. Admission: €2 / Friends of Artium: €1
The aim of this film season is to raise awareness of women filmmakers and their films. Realities excluded from the canonical history of cinema that we feel are essential to champion. Therefore, given that we initially proposed a chronological itinerary and later forged a relationship between films through cinema itself, this new edition features a new addition: the women filmmakers themselves will suggest films directed by women throughout the history of cinema and these film directors will also present the sessions.
We will approach the cinematographic universe of each of these women directors once a month. A possible route to gradually continue to rewrite
our own history of cinema.
2 April
Korotkie vstrechi (Brief Encounters), Kira Muratova, Soviet Union, 1967, 96 min
Introduced by Clara Rus, filmmaker
In Brief Encounters (1967), Kira Muratova plays Valentina, a Ukrainian councillor imprisoned for conventions and behaviour that are deemed crucial to be an exemplary Soviet citizen. Her husband, Maksim, is an unorthodox geologist who every once in a while leaves Valentina to embark on expeditions. During one of these he meets Nadya, a young waitress who has travelled to the city and ends up working as a maid in Valentina and Maksim’s house. This love triangle serves the director to create a mockery of the idea of utopian love, while revealing her astute understanding of the relationship between work and home.
Kira Muratova did not have an easy film career and Brief Encounters, like most films on the margins of criticising the system, was banned by the communist administration, being branded as prurient and far removed from the spirit of a good citizen.

The consequences soon follow, and the young girl begins to reveal her true nature.
