Works from Artium Collection at the Anteroom

Grey Flag

In this edition, the Face On programme reflects on the concept of heritage. Over the course of the coming two months, the works on display will prompt us to consider how heritage is defined and shaped: the function of its value and the connection between this and the individual; what tools are available to adapt it to the evolution implicit in the context of art; and what projects are employed by the museum at this time of slashed budgets. Behind the Face On wall are the stores where the museum keeps its reserves.

More than 3,000 pieces are preserved in a stable environment in their crates or hanging from metal grids, waiting, like the words in a book or the keys on a piano, for that moment when they are stirred into action by some seeing them, thinking them or using them to construct an image from memory or new thoughts about our situation in the world.

This edition of the programme has two purposes: firstly, to extract from the dark surroundings of the stores those works that question or cross the boundaries of what we generally understand by public heritage; and secondly, to raise awareness of the work done by the museum's staff in collecting information, researching and cataloguing works, protecting and restoring them, recording their history, speculating on new interpretations, etc. Each of the tasks in this process creates a heritage that can and must be shared and shown to advantage.

The works, each to be displayed for a period of three weeks, will provide an opportunity to consider a series of issues to do with ownership, the market and its limits; access to the works in the collection, the museum's policy on acquisitions, deposits and donations; and the installation of complex works, the research carried out, etc. The works that have been selected for this purpose cover a wide spectrum of artists and interests.
