From the fragmented ideological perspective of each individual artist and imbibed with a sense of uncertainty, the artworks featured in the exhibition Tiempos abiertos (Open times) are a reflection of the tensions, chaos and desires created in a context of euphoria and crisis.

Tiempos abiertos is an exhibition of works from the Artium collection, one of the most representative collections of contemporary art in the Spanish state and the foremost collection of contemporary Basque art. Started by the Provincial Council of Alava in the 1960s, it was with the turn of the century and the inauguration of the Artium museum that the collection realised its full potential with the development of an exhibition programme and museum project.

Since then, the number of artworks has doubled and to date almost one hundred exhibitions have been organised, often in association with other public and private collections. The collection is analysed on a day to day basis by museum professionals and is placed under the critical gaze of researchers and heritage and institutional criticism theorists in a number of different programmes, giving rise to publications and exhibitions that reflect on its place in contemporary society.

An approach to the context
Following the death of the great stories, the collapse of the main socio-political patrons who experienced their most paradigmatic moment in the fall of the Berlin wall, and the rejection of previous narrative models would lead to the suspension of the univocal sense of history and the fragmentation of different ideologies. The new context, marked by the free market economy, would also bring with it flashes of unlimited growth and the development of a globalised world and, at the same time, would start an unstoppable increase in the redistributive capacity of politics, accelerating the destruction of social cohesion.

Since then, our culture has had to get used to living with fewer certainties, in which fields such as contemplation, art and philosophy try to manage that uncertainty. Today, the situation has become critical and in contrast to the confidence of previous decades, we find ourselves awakening from the shock caused by an economic crisis that we would hardly have imagined possible. We have observed the death throes of the system in the west and have been witness to the end of a social development that goes hand in hand with economic development.

In the words of Zizek, the internal marriage between capitalism and democracy is disintegrating; economics and politics have seen their powers inverted and it is the people, society, who are forced to seek a new model of representation in which we can recognise ourselves. The art system, and culture, have not been unaffected by this situation and have largely become a supplement to the entertainment market.

The exhibition Tiempos abiertos takes a look at this problematic context from the world of art, attempting to provoke contemplation and generate meanings that go beyond techniques, means and appearances. The works have been selected in chronological order over the last 15 years, from the creation of Artium till the present day. It proposes an unprejudiced look at a period that has taken us from spectacle to crisis.

Art has always maintained the need to condense and represent social and historical processes symbolically and most of our artists have made it their business to incorporate the decomposition process of this comfortable reality in their work, highlighting what was excluded or repressed in this discourse and which has lead to the context of the current crisis.
