The Tabakalera International Centre for Contemporary Culture and Artium Museoa, Museum of Contemporary Art of the Basque Country, in collaboration with the Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation, have announced the call for applications for the sixth edition of the JAI Institute for Artistic Practices’ training programme, which is set to take place in July and August 2025. The first edition of the JAI call dates back to 2020, and it is based on the transfer of knowledge from artists participating in the programmes of the three institutions to artists and other agents in the contemporary art sector. To date, Marwa Arsanios, Claire Atherton, Josu Bilbao, Fermín Jiménez Landa, Maider López and Éric Lacasa have been confirmed as teachers for JAI 2025. The programme also includes mentoring by the artists Itziar Okariz, Alejandro Cesarco, Ibon Aranberri and Olatz Otalora. The deadline for applications is 14 February.
The JAI Institute for Artistic Practices’ 2025 call for applications is aimed at artists and other agents in the sector, with no other requirement than an interest in deepening their knowledge of the methodologies of art. To take part in the selection process, which will choose a maximum of 16 students, applicants must complete the form that can be found on the Artium Museoa and Tabakalera websites, together with the terms and conditions of the call, and include their CV and bio, a cover letter and a digital file containing images of their previous work.
The JAI Study Committee, made up of Ibon Aranberri (artist), Itziar Okariz (artist), Alejandro Cesarco (artist), Olatz Otalora (artist), Catalina Lozano (chief curator of Artium Museoa) and Oier Etxeberria (head of Public Programmes at Tabakalera), will select the 16 participants and announce their choice on 14 March.
With a duration of eight weeks, JAI is structured around pedagogical proposals designed by artists for artists, and it is presented as a resource for broadening dialogues between different ways of understanding artistic activity. Ever since its inception, the programme’s mechanics have required that each teacher attempt to pass on to the students the practical knowledge that defines his or her respective working processes.
The training sessions will take place between 2 July and 22 August 2025. They will begin at Artium Museoa, which will provide the students with a common workspace and access to its archive and library for research, before moving the classes to Tabakalera, mainly to the studio of the Artists’ Space, at the end of July. In addition to access to the common areas, each participant will have a studio during this phase of the training. The students will also travel to Alzuza for a few days in July, as part of the collaboration with the Jorge Oteiza Museum Foundation.
The enrolment fee is 400 euros. Those selected will be provided with assistance in finding accommodation in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Donostia-San Sebastián, the cost of which is not included in the enrolment fee. The JAI Study Committee may decide to award up to 4 scholarships, which will include exemption from tuition fees and an additional 900 euros for maintenance.
